Zutekh Podcast 003 - Tristan Da Cunha - Come Into My House!

Track artwork

A cheeky Poddy that been on phone for a fair while now, One of my fave DJ's & Long time insparation Tristan Da Cunha.I bought my first ever "house" record of Tris back in the play music days & i've been watching him play for years at Basic's always one to be warming proceeding perfectly or taking it to the next level after the guest. The Basics 20th Birthday mix is one of my all time faves & this one is not too far behind!Proper party vibez!!

These are a few Tris had to say about it....

"When i was asked to do a podcast for Zutekh i started to think about what kind of
mix i should do for it.Do i play this do i play that? I have so many different flavours
that i am into but i didn't want it to be a mish mash of all of them.So with this in mind
i decided to pick a certain style and go with a particular vibe.I listen to Ad Shelton's
ace podcast again so i didn't do anything similar as i wanted to present something
that would be different than what was done previously I thought about doing
something cutting edge with loads of new promos and unreleased stuff, i thought
about doing a 90's deep house mix as i have loads of weapons on that tip too,but
what i realised is there's lots of those mixes floating about so i decided to go for one
of my favourite vibes, An Old School House Party Mix."

Jef K - Late Night Soul Mix 01-01-2002

With most folk around these ends heading to Monsoon in the Park, pretending they've always loved Techno...

"Excuse me i remember when u was in Lush every Thursday & Iocus on a Friday giving Electro wobbles to Micky Slimm,& you told us that our music was boring"...Rant over!

In all fairness i'm not really that into the Cocoon,Vagabonds, trendy vest, muscle queen, fake tan & Geebee vibe, So if i was fighting fit today(Man Flu). I'd be heading down the Garage this eve to see Jef K alongside solid residents Tristan Da Cunha & Buckley!

I've had my eye on Jef K for a while now ever since he did the "i'm in love today" with fellow Frenchman Chris Carrier, he's a solid producer & a wicked DJ who clocking up some serious air miles now. That place will be rocking tonight & to add unk to Funk Iain o Hare & Charlie Myers will be on Backroom duties.!!

So all in all Fuck Cocunt in the Park, listen to this mix instead of going there & head down to see the man in the flesh later today!..

Enjoy!

Tristan Da Cunha-Back to Basics 20th Birthday(live mix)

If Carlsberg did mixe's they'd proberly be the best in the world....no they wouldn't becuse this is.

I don't have to say much apart from,...

This is without a doubt one of the best mixes i've heard & witnessed(i was there)..Tristan has always been a massive influnece to me, from selling records at play/to playing records at basics & been a generally nice guy whose love for music & smiles is visablly blatent.

Heres What Tris has to say about the mix...

BacktoBasics 20 years of Acid House - Nov 26th 2011

What a night this was , 20 years building up to it and it really was up there with the best we've ever done ..... The whole night ticked every box for me and was literally like i'd been transported in a time machine to the crazy hazy days in the early 90's when i just started going out to places like Basics. The atmosphere was electric and vibe was super high frequency with a lot of people going for it & peaking as soon as they got through the door. There was so much love in the club that night... i stood back and watched what was going on around me and i felt extremely proud. Proud that after 20yrs of weekly parties, Basics is still killing it and that i have played a part in some of the magic. I'm not gonna bang on about it too much though as you really did HAVE TO BE THERE to understand how good it was. If you were at BacktoBasics on 26th of November 2011, you know you were a part of house music history. If you weren't then maybe this mix can give your ears an idea of the kind of night it was.

This mix was the last set of the night in the main room 6-8am ... i had no idea what i was gonna play none of it was rehearsed ... it was done in the heat of the moment using the energy and feedback off the dance floor to take me from one record to the next... sounds cheesy i know but that's exactly how it was. Basics has always been a two way thing between the residents and the crowd... we bring the music, they bring the noise... it's a party. Of course i knew some of the records i definitely wanted to play but how or when i was gonna play them was to be decided on the night, in the moment.
Upon reflection, listening back there is a definite narrative & meaning to the tracks or songs i was playing. All the tracks i played with lyrics in were speaking for me and the tracks without were "scene setters"... setting the vibe/theme to feel like a real, sweaty, old school party. Also some of the lyrics are very poignant if you relate them to Basics moving homes & turning the page onto the next chapter in it's epic story. One door closes and another door opens.

I'd like to thank all the loyal basics party people for being the best crowd a d.j could want and thanks to all the artists and labels that work hard to make such amazing music for us to dance and lose our minds to. Without the music or the dancers to dance to it, there would be no party and no d.j's. RESPECT.

Huge Love goes out to all the Basics family for getting this far. It's been one hell of a ride and it ain't over yet ...

Buckle up as we blast into the new year, new era , new dimension.

Catch up with Jon Woodall.

For the regulars down at Basics, Jon is a fixture and a well known/well liked lad down there, always seen behind one of the booths either playing or partying. Forever smiling, full of positive party vibes and cheer. Jon has now been made a resident down at the Basics institute, released the first EP alongside Buckley on the re-launch of the label and even has a helping hand in the bookings. He has a busy schedule ahead with dates such as MUSTACHIO! ...All Over Your FACE @ Rainbow(Birmingham) and regulary does the afters for Basics in the black box  alongside James Barsnsley which lead to him going back to back with Kerri Chandler at the BacktoBasics 1000th party (EPIC)....With Andrew Weatherall on this weekend and Jon doing the afters, I don't think i'll be getting a rest and niether will my bank account!

We sent Jon a few questions over, as we do here at Cookin', and this is what we got back;

Easy jon hows things?

All good thank you...

First of all tell us a little about yourself? where your from? What got you into house?

I'm from sunny Middlesbrough originally, there's quite a few of us in Leeds actually! As far as getting into house goes, I used to listen to those Ministry of Sound CD's when I was about 13/14, not religiously or anything, but knew I preferred that to the usual rubbish. It wasn't until I got a Roger Sanchez Global House mix off the front of Mixmag when I was 15 that I really got into it. That CD still is one of my all time favourites and from there I was hooked, I got a job glass collecting at Tall Tree's in Yarm and started saving for some decks!

We ask this everytime and it’s a typical interview question….which artists/people are your influences ?

In the early days it was the American's like Roger Sanchez, Harry Choo Choo and Derrick Carter, these day's my influences are a lot closer to home, I would honestly say that most of my favourite DJ's are my friends. Back To Basics has obviously been a massive influence and I've always thought the residents outshine the guests more often than not.
Production wise there's labels like Rush Hour, Plannet E, R&S, Hot flush, Running Back, Fear of Fying to name a few.

Your part of the Back to basics family now, and even had the first release alongside Buckley on the re-launch of the label how did that all come about?

Around that time I had a lot of free time through the week, I was doing the weekly after parties at Mint with James Barnsley and that was my only job. Buckley used to come round a couple of times a week to hang out and we'd spend a lot of time looking for new music. It was just a natural progression from there. The track wasn't intended for Back To Basics label as the idea to re-launch it hadn't even come about yet! When Dave decided to re-launch the label he took it as the first release! Buzzin!

So what’s next any more release’s in the pipeline?
Since the summer I've been working for Basics doing the bookings and promotion which has meant I haven't had a lot of time to produce, it's something I'm starting to sort out now and hopefully over the next few months get some stuff finished. Me and Buckley still have a few tracks we're sitting on too.

Your part of the wallpaper down at Basics there must be a funny tale or moment you can share with us??

There's not many of the bigger one's fit for public consumption really, little one's include dog shit in the DJ booth, bingo numbers being called over the music and taxi drivers taking the glory!

Since your working for Basics with the bookin's and promo can you let the cat out of the bag for any future bookings?

No! But, I can tell you we've just confirmed some amazing things up until the middle of April! Not to mention some of the bigger events we'll be doing in the lead up to our 20th birthday!!

In a crazy world name your pefect Basics line up across all three rooms?

I couldn't really answer this without letting the cat out of the bag for the coming months!!

Quickes….

Favourite record at the moment?

Subb-an Feat: Beckford - The Lovers Night (Spectral Sound)

Favourite snack ?

Cookies!

Top 3 fictional characters?

Slow cookin or fast food?

Back to Basics - The 1000th Party

1991. Britain is in deep recession. Unemployment figures reach 2 million. The Gulf war has begun. The nation is submerged in doom and gloom.

By November, the locals of Leeds had an escape route. A gateway to a better place with good company, good times and a soundtrack to match. On November 21st of that year, The Music Room opened its doors to the first Back to Basics night. Ralph Lawson, unaware that he was about to kick-start an institution, playing the first record; Marshall Jefferson's 'Open Our Eyes'. Fast forward 20 years and they are the proud owners of the longest running club night in the world. In its time the like of Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx, Groove Armada, Derrick Carter and Todd Terry have taken control of the mixer at the now legendary club. As Basics founder Dave Beer once said, ‘anyone who is worth their salt in dance music have passed through the doors’. This weekend, Basics regulars will be treated to their 1000th party, with deep/soulful house ambassador Kerri ‘Kaoz’ Chandler headlining. Chandler will be playing a 4 HOUR set, complete with live vox and keyboards. Holy Schmoke.

Kerri 'Kaoz' Chandler

It doesn't stop there for the Basics crew. The line-ups for the next two month have been released, and they are as strong as ever - there'll be no break to get our heads together with a solid line up each week throughout January and February. Slow Cookin' favourites S.A.S. (Adam Shelton & Subb-an) celebrate their One Records party, we see the return of long time resident and Basics regular Andrew Weatherall and we round off an eventful two months with Italians stars Massi DL and Rio Padice. As well as these superb bookings, the residents are amongst the best you will find. Upstaging the guests is a regular occurence.

Cast your eyes over these line ups and get your place booked ASAP.
