J.Cub Recorded Live at Throwing Shapes @ The Garage

 Track artwork

We did an interview with J.Cub a while back and he kindly supplied us with a mix, well here's another one. Which i personally love. I don't need to say much else as J.Cub already has.

"When I was asked to play for the Throwing Shapes launch party I jumped at the chance, especially because I was asked to play The Waxwerks (Record Store by day, back room of the club by night).
The brief was simple, play what I want how I want but keep it interesting, so head 1st into my record collection I went.
If you like your sets a bit different taking you in, over, around, under and through the houses with a 4x4 beat then you should like this, if you like your sets to sound the same throughout then this probably isnt for you (try it you may like it)
Oh and all is played off vinyl, now you cant play anything else in a Vinyl only Record Store can you!!??"

Derrick May -98 WJLB (Detroit Radio)-1989.

I come across this whilst looking for the Derrick May-Mayday Mix(which i will find & put up very soon). This is basically a mix recorded in 1988 from live radio back int day here's what the chap had to say about it...

"I happened to press record back in 1988 on New Years Eve to catch this “MayDay Mix” by Derrick May as 98 WJLB (Detroit Radio) counted down to the new year 1989. I really loved recording these MayDay mixes because there were always traxx that were not in stores or If I happened to have the record I would hear a different version of the song than the one on the record. But the craziest thing about the MayDay mixes is the reel to reel that you can hear sometimes spinning backward through the mix. This is classic Detroit I bet no one has this recording ha-ha!!! I’m sure I have a lot more of them I can dig up as well. This is a good history lesson for those pretending to know about the roots of Detroit Dance Music!"

QUELL-MIXES

Quell is swell....have a peep!

Here's his Bio.

"One could be very challenged and even confused looking at Quell’s output so far. Although a relatively young artist in terms of discography, the producer has already made it clear that he is very little concerned about sticking to one style of music or a certain scene of musicians. It is so rare these days to find individuals who have a bold approach towards dance music, pushing genre defying DJ-ing and general diversity, not only in the studio but also in life. Ranging from mid tempo deep house and afro-beat house/techno, to straight up Chicago/SF jackin’ house, he has worked with labels such as Ibadan, These Days, Boddhi Satva's Offering Recordings, Kolour Recordings and Blockhead Recordings to name but a few.

Quell’s music is an amalgamation of images, sounds and nostalgia that derive from his perception of a universal “club sound”. Coming from an indie pop/rock background and having lived in London for a long time, since the tender age of 17, he was able to witness the flourishing worldwide dance movement of the late 90s and allowed himself to be exposed to a multinational musical collage that would later influence his art immensely.

Quell is a DJ's DJ. The words that would accurately describe his DJ performances are diversity, versatility and dance-floor perception. To quote the artist “…I’ll play almost anything I feel like given the right moment on the right dance-floor. House, Techno, Pop, Disco… I am generally against just filling up a bag with the latest batch of released records from the local record stores and going out to play wearing an imaginary blindfold...” If there’s one thing for certain, it is that as far as talent and promise go, Quell has plenty of both, and it won’t be long before he becomes one of dance music’s household names. Jef K - Late Night Soul Mix 01-01-2002

With most folk around these ends heading to Monsoon in the Park, pretending they've always loved Techno...

"Excuse me i remember when u was in Lush every Thursday & Iocus on a Friday giving Electro wobbles to Micky Slimm,& you told us that our music was boring"...Rant over!

In all fairness i'm not really that into the Cocoon,Vagabonds, trendy vest, muscle queen, fake tan & Geebee vibe, So if i was fighting fit today(Man Flu). I'd be heading down the Garage this eve to see Jef K alongside solid residents Tristan Da Cunha & Buckley!

I've had my eye on Jef K for a while now ever since he did the "i'm in love today" with fellow Frenchman Chris Carrier, he's a solid producer & a wicked DJ who clocking up some serious air miles now. That place will be rocking tonight & to add unk to Funk Iain o Hare & Charlie Myers will be on Backroom duties.!!

So all in all Fuck Cocunt in the Park, listen to this mix instead of going there & head down to see the man in the flesh later today!..

Enjoy!
