Rahaan - Disco Not Disco

Just been listening to this in the car and felt compelled to post it up for some slow cookin' consumption!

If you have not heard this mix, or even heard of Rahaan before then get on board. He is an amazing Dj and has released countless great edits to boot. You need him in your life basically and this mix is somewhat a baptism of fire....chopping and blending loads of edits and oddities with his seemingly effortless flair!

Perfect for those all those sunny days coming up (hopefully). Everytime I put this on it lifts my mood and plasters a huge gormless grin all over my mug!

Enjoy !

We had chance to catch up with Mono_Cult resident and co-owner Matt Long...

So then Mono_Cult turns four this weekend, how did it all start(what inspired you to do it) and did you ever think you ever think it would turn into one of the UK's most credible and successful nights?

It started 4 years ago on a Sunday afternoon at The Lounge. We booked Exercise One for the first party to play live but when we arrived at The Lounge to set the system up the owners had no idea the sort of party we were trying to put on and assumed it was some sort of birthday, and nearly pulled the plug on the first event before we even started. Luckily they were really impressed and by the third event, when we had Rob Mello play on on the May bank holiday, the word had spread with over 800 people rammed into The Lounge. Unfortunately for us though the authorities weren't happy with the amount of noise complaints and by our sixth party in The Lounge we got shut down by the environmental health and the venue had a causation on their licence :(

Since then we have moved around loads of venues in Leeds from The Courtyard (Now Nation Of Shopkeepers), The Faversham, Mint Club and Wire. We are now doing less parties but on bigger scale returning to The Lounge on Easter Sunday for a very special. The Revenge, Space Dimension Controller and Midland are all gracing the terrace. We will be doing some big parties at our favourite venue The Faversham which i guess we can call home so keep an eye out for the line up on Sat 24th Sept, its BIG!

- Mono_Cult as a brand has also guested for other club nights, clubs which has been the highlight?

Paul, Brad and I have guested at some great places over the years but last summer was a real highlight. We played at We Love Space in The Red Box for Burlington Project then flew to Sardinia to Play at Ambra Night, both were amazing!

Now the line up for the fourth birthday is unreal what made you go for the line up you have?

To be honest the line up was really difficult to lock down for the Birthday as we moved the date and venue a few times. We are really happy how its turned out keeping things diverse and credible with Soundstream, FCL, and Julio making their Leeds debut.

We were in Berlin in January and saw Soundstream play at Panorama Bar. He is without doubt one of the best DJs we have seen, no wonder Prosumer and Steffi rate him so much. We felt a three hour set is ….he's going to play 3 hours for us. I was on to FCL over a year ago and have built up a good relationship with Bart aka Red D, so was only right to give them there debut on our Birthday. Julio Bashmore is 'hype' at the moment and he is going to show everyone why! He is going to be huge in 2011. DRMC is company is our one to watch. You will be seeing him a lot over the next 12 months.

- You've had a fair few established artists play for you guys, any stand out performances??

For me it would be Dixon, he was someone i have tried to book for about three years and finally got him locked down to play in our most intimate venue, Wire. Everytime Move D has played for us, he has killed it.
Reboot was brilliant when he played for us on NYD 2008 in the Fav, he came on after Matthew Dear and Ryan Elliot and was outstanding…this was of course before he got all trendy ;)

Other highlights have been Ame, Soul Clap, Rhadoo and Prosumer.

Dixon

mono_cult has ran for four years, there must be a funny tale mishap to let us know about?

There's been a few to be honest…..

Last years birthday got pretty out of hand, we left Wire club in a bit a state which resulted in me and Brad leaving our record bags in the back of a taxi never to be seen again. Lost 2 laptops, records, Traktor, gutted!!! The previous month i also left the nights takings in a taxi to - don't trust me with anything once i ve had a few.

We did a villa party in Ibiza the first year we started mono, the villa was packed, decks on the terrace, party in full swing, then about 5 Gaurdia Civil (police) cars turned up to shut the party down, none of us spoke any Spanish, they took our passports off us for running the party and threatened to charge us about 5,000euro……..Luckily after a few tense hours with the we had our passports returned and no fine was given :)

Any future Mono_Cult events we should know about?

mono @ The Lounge, Easter Sunday - 24th April with The Revenge, Space Dimension Controller and Midland

We have
something up our sleeve for July and Sat 24th September we have a huge and diverse line up for a party in The Faversham.

Chocolate Milk-Actions Speak Louder than Words (1975)

Chocolate Milk back int day

We not one here for giving away other people's albums without permission, however I felt i had to share this with you guys as it's just pure funk genius. Get ya this out on for ya sunday morning chills. A bit about Chocolate milk taken from wiki

Biography

Chocolate Milk was formed in 1974 in Memphis, Tennessee by saxophonist Amadee Castenell, Jr shortly after the emergence of the bands Kool & the Gang and Earth, Wind & Fire. The eight-piece band relocated to New Orleans to become the studio band for songwriter and producer Allen Toussaint, following the tenure of The Meters as Toussaint's band. Chocolate Milk backed Toussaint as a live band and on his album New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival (1976), and also recorded with Paul McCartney. The band then signed with RCA Records.
Their first of eight albums released on RCA was Action Speaks Louder Than Words, an album that included a political message. The title cut, "Action Speaks Louder Than Words" (1975), has a break beat that has been sampled numerous times in hip hop music, including "Move The Crowd" from the 1987 album Paid in Full by Eric B. & Rakim, and "Don't Let Your Mouth Write A Check Your Ass Can't Cash" (1991) by Stetsasonic.
The band became known for "Action Speaks Louder Than Words", and other hit songs: "Girl Callin'" (1978), and "Say Won't Cha" (1979). The band was also known for their versatility in musical styles, later adding elements of disco, prevalent on their hit, "Blue Jeans" (1981). Chocolate Milk broke up in 1983 due to the waning popularity of disco, numerous personnel changes, and changes in producers after splitting with Toussaint in 1980.

KSD @ Verve + PBR Streetgang interview

MARCH 12TH
KITCHEN SINK DISCO with PBR Streetgang

For the people of Huddersfield KSD is about the only credible outlet for underground electronic music, it’s an iregular and one off soirée held in the comfortable surrounding’s of Verve Bar. Past guests have included Neil Scott(El Diablos Social), Cosmic Boogie & boxing day regular Greg Wilson. These party’s are really something special and myself n Frase are pretty proud to play at a few of them. The night is run by our good friend Jamie “Fatneck” Low  who is a regular as Space in Ibiza for the We Love party’s, and this Saturday he welcomes fellow We Love pals and the sort after PBR Streetgang (asylum, 2020 vision). PBR Steetgang have been chugging along very nicely for the past few year gathering a lot of respect and gaining a lot of booth scalps playing at place such as Space, M.O.S, Below, Asylum, Garden fest(Croatia) & many many more. We had chance to catch up with PBR’S Tom Thorpe as we do here at Slow Cookin’.

So Tom your one half of PBR how did you and Bonar meet??

I met Bonar around twelve years ago in Birmingham. I had moved down to work for a club/promoter organising tours and djing. I befriended him through  visiting a record shop. Most dj's would hang out at this one place on a Saturday, listening and buying tunes. Bonar and i had really similar taste, so got we chatting. The rest is history.

You’ve both now secured a foot in the scene has it been a hard ride??and where did it all start?

I don't think it's particularly easy these days making a living and a career from this industry. We've both been doing it a long time, and worked hard for it. Our first gig playing together was in 2003 at the old 'Northern Light' in Leeds where we booked and ended up playing with X press 2. We both really enjoyed it and got some great feedback, so decided we'd keep with that format.

With releases on 2020 vision, Wolf Music & E.A.R already what else do you guys have in the pipeline?

There is a lot coming out over the next few months...

(You can listen to PBR Streetgangs tackle on there soundcloud page)

You’ve got a busy calendar any particular gig’s your looking forward too??

The summer is shaping up to be a really good one again. Playing for 'We Love' at Space, Ibiza is definitely one of the highlights. The 'Garden' festival in Croatia  has become pretty special too. Berlin looks like it will happen again soon, love that place.

You are also responsible for the Asylum parties, will we be seeing anymore of those in the near future??

Yeah, at the minute i'm concentrating on the 'Garden parties' which take place on  the bank holidays, May 1st, May 29th, and August 28th at the Faversham in Leeds. Over the five years of doing them they have almost turned into mini festivals, and take up a lot of my time.

Asylum ran for a long time doing parties in all over ?? What’s you fondest memory or memories??

I have loads of great memories. Throughout the years of putting on acts i now have my favorite dj's. But my fondest  moments are form the the mint club itself. I love that club, it's really special. There is no place like it for me. I made a lot a friends a long the way, which i'm grateful for.Quickies?

Fave record at the moment?

soundstream number 5

You hate it when???

djing in a bar and a pissed up person tells you to "pick it up a bit", or "have you got..." Tool!!!!

Best excuse you’ve ever heard for anything?

a friend of mine used the line "i got attacked by a squirrel" to excuse himself from work. bold!

Slow cookin or fast food?

got to be slow cookin. x

Cheers Tom...

Iain O Hare-The Radiovox(outcross records)

Last week a good friend of ours here at SC released his debut E,P on respected label Outcross Records owned by rising star Miguel Campbell. Outcross Records is personally a favorite of mine. Its flavour is always well produced tackle with a seaoning of French /disco sprinkled on top for good measure.

We spoke to Iain to give us a few words and explain what the E.P is all about.

OK, so the first track made for the Ep, I’ll Come Running, was actually made back in summer 2010. I got the idea after hearing and old song on Radio 2. I did a bit of searching, found the name, and took it down to the Outcross Records Studio. The idea for the track was fairly instant, and from then on everything flowed. A few alterations by Miguel and myself were made this year before the final release.

The second track, Radiovox, was an idea I came up with even longer ago than the first one! I started it in early 2010, it was then left until earlier this year. I took the parts down to the studio, the bass line was re-programmed, and it was pretty much done! I had also heard the original song, of the acapella used in this track on Radio 2, hence the “Radiovox” name of the Ep…..you gotta love Radio 2!

I’d like to thank Matt Hughes for the artwork, Dean Gatenby and Danny Matthews for the photography, and Miguel Campbell for all his help over the past few years……Thank you.

My next release should by out around Easter time on Outcross Records, so keep a look out…..

You can download the e.p here
