Junia OD.

Junia @ Cosmic Boogie(warming things for Derrick Carter)

With everything slowing down and getting deeper, Junia is a breath of fresh air to see play as his tracks are full of energy and built with the dancefloor in mind. His reputation for keeping the dancefloor jackin' whilst "throwing down" along with his tight production, has lead to releases on labels such as Meltin Funk, Greenhouse, G-swing, Lostmydog and a remix that has dropped this week on Gramaphondzie's Disko Zoo. On top of these releases, Junia has had the pleasure of playing in parties from his home town Huddersfield to New York via Belgium and WMC Miami.

The crowd at Basics when Junia was playing.

I've seen Junia play a fair few times and he's never failed to tear the roof off the place, for example when he guested for us at Back to Basics when Le Bloc hosted the middle room the place felt lke an F.A. Cup final that night and any one who was at the Cosmic Boogie party last year would agree he was just as good if not better than Derrick Carter and even Carter is a fan of Junia. For me he is one of the most talented and natural DJ's in his genre.

 Junia's remix which has been released this week on DiskoZoo;

We sent junia a few questions over to answer as we do here at Slow Cookin' and this is what we got back....

Tell us about how it all started and what got you into the house scene?

Similar to everyone really. I found a sound that attracted me that at the time was a Terry Hunter Tape from 1993, Ive always been the kind of guy who either loves something or hates it, Once i fell in love with it i had to explore it to the furthest degree I possibly could! I still am exploring it in fairness, I've achieved some cool stuff but theres still a long way to go! I feel lucky that my brother and friends at the time were mostly all older than me and had great taste in music, they were very much dedicated to the better releases that were coming out of the dance music world at that time so I was exposed to great DJ's and artists, I was all over it, a real fan, I could of told you what size shoe Cajmere had, and all that geeky stuff, Im still a fan, I still go to the match, only now I get a game every know and again!

Who are your inspirations in the music world?

I am inspired by people who are real and the music they deliver, there are only a few people who are pretty pivotal to me in with my stream of inspiration in fairness, Im not into brown nosing these Hollywood chumps that don't deserve our time, although I like nothing more that to meet guys who I have looked up to and learned from and find them to be charming individuals who really deserve their credence! I have affection to those who stick by their guns seeing no relevance to stray from their musical beliefs, there are only a few of the big guys now who really play music that they 100% believe in, and don't just play for the dough, and  I feel guys like me owe them a lot , I feel grateful for some reason! I don't know maybe im being overly romantic about them, some of which im lucky enough to count as friends.  Can you imagine if some of the undergrounds more popular stalwarts had gone down the path that so many did of over commercialising themselves? I used to love checkin Roger Sanchez or Erick Morillo play in the early 90's but would rather burn that go to check him now! Im proud of those who relented and they have my respect! no need to name names but they know who they are to me.

You’ve had a lot of records out, on a number of labels. Which of your releases are you most proud of, and why?

I would say that maybe 'Whats the Damage' is one of the most beneficial to me as an artist, which was first released by my old mate Victor Simonelli on his label at the time, I think maybe its due to the diversity of DJ's that played it, I was a young guy that was very into the Chicago style of house as at that time we were in full effect of the 'sub-genre everything to death' yet what certain Dj's played became very specific yet Louie Vega & Tony Humphrey's were playing it and it led to me being asked to play on the radio in the USA and so on! It was my first release that I'd had and a decent yard stick in how things were to continue to develop!

I heard somewhere that DJ Pierre headhunted you, is this true?

I wouldn't say that is an accurate summarisation! Pierre and I DJ'd together circa 1999 - 2002, I also did a remix for Pierre of a K-Alexi Shelby track he released on his label DJP around the same time, we were in the same group of friends as at that time I spent a lot of time in the New York area so we shared some great times together, we did Miami WMC all together as a group quite a few times and did some gigs together both in the US and the UK! Head hunted makes it sound like we were brokers at Morgan Stanley! we shared great times, we have common interests and he held great knowledge for me to feed off at the time and I feel lucky that I was ask to preform with him and furthermore to remix for his label! Although you've reminded me to drop him a line not spoken to him in a while.

You’ve been playing records in clubs and held residencies for a fair while now, any funny stories?

To be honest im a fairly professional guy, I take what I do as a DJ seriously, you wont hear stories of me playing poor sets due to being too drunk etc. This is my passion! This is what I do best. and I make sure I deliver as if I don't I don't want to think there was people in the club maybe on the dancefloor who could have done better, Ive been there and felt that burn, Im extremely competitive and I want people to enjoy what i do when i perform, I have my fair share of stories but do not want speak out of turn, but I wasn't the one being laughed at I can assure you! I always have great fun with the people I meet along the way and that have invited me to be their guest, I know my place, im no superstar, but without being all 'Hollywood' I can handle myself on the turntables around those that are - im just grateful im asked to go say to a country or club to perform, its one of those things that you always wish to do as a beginner in any scene, so you don't waste it when it comes!

What’s in the pipeline for 2011?

I take things very much as they come, But I have some boxes to tick off from the list of dreams this year thats for sure!

Quickies??

Fave record at the moment?

is it bad to say one of my own?

Fave piece of studio equipment?

I don't have as much stuff as I used to but maybe my Focusrite Compounder, its a compressor that I run with my drum machines! beefs up the bottom end like!

Slow cookin’ or fast food?

Don't matter so long as it good food!?

Cheers junia. Some nice answers there.

Neil Scott's Pick of the Week

Each week, we ask El Diablos founder and Piccadilly Records grafter Neil Scott to send over his favourite new release - with a mini review and a link to click buy.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Released 24th Jan 2011

"chicken lips are back with yet another side project on they're new(ish) lipservice imprint. it's the dr dunks mix thats the one to work the dancefloor though. "

disc

The Rhythm Odyssey is Dean Meredith of Chicken Lips and Bizarre Inc fame. "Move Groove" draws on the wealth of experience Dean has in creating spine tingling house music. This club banger has all the hallmarks of classic (ware)house - a relentless piano riff teases an overweight electronic bass, topped off with Dean’s trademark, crisp Chi-town drums. Eric Duncan aka Dr Dunks of Rub & Tug fame and hot new talent Vermin step up to the remix challenge. Eric D goes for the disco break approach. He inserts riffs at will and brings an NYC block party feel to the cut. Vermin warms up his trusted 808 to spice up the proceedings with a heavy interpretation of this track.

1. Warehouse Mix
2. Dr Dunks Remix
3. Vermin's Blackout Remix

Q & A with Jordan Peak

Few people will be familiar with the name Jordan Peak, but here at Slow Cookin’ we are pretty confident that by the middle of 2011 you will be. Jordan already has a catalogue of credible labels knocking at his door desperate to sign his electronic creations since his first release that came out at the back end of 2009. We advise you keep an ear/eye for this lad from Brading as he is set to be big news. He is already gaining massive support from household names such as Matthias Tanzmann, Burnski, DJ Sneak ,Huxley & Kevin Griffiths.

This is one of Jordan's tracks of the forthcoming release's on One Records being dropped at Fabric by the label owner Adam Shelton.

Check out some other releases too, and a cheeky edit of ODB.

Jordan Peak - Rouges Theme EP by Smoke City Music

JORDAN PEAK - HANGIN' WITH THE WU (SAVED ADE SAMPLER) by savedrecords

ODB feat. Kelis "Got Ya Money" (Jordan Peak's Rogue Edit) by Jordan Peak

We sent Jordan a few questions and he kindly answered them for us.

Easy Jordan, how’s things?
Hey mate i'm great thanks. Hope your well

Tell us about how it all started and what got you into the house scene?
Everyone laughs or is a bit surprised when i tell them but i first heard House music through my Dad. He wasn't a DJ but at that time during the 90's he loved the music and had lots of Strictly Rhythm and Nervous records 12"s. He also had lots of Todd Terry, Masters At Work, Kerri Chandler, the early Armand Van Helden stuff. I brought the cheapest pair of turntables I could at 13 and neverlooked back

Which artists or people inspired you ?
Well lots of the artists I mentioned in the previous question. The first Daft Punk album "Homework" was then and still is now such a big influence on my music. It was actually the first album I ever brought and personally for me one of the best of all time

We hear that you’ve been named as one of Mixmag’s ones to watch in 2011, who are your ones to watch?
Yes thats very exciting, very appreciative of the exposure. I'd say keep an eye on Rio Padice, Subb An, Adam Shelton, Maya Jane Coles, Makam, M A N I K . . . I think there all going to have big years in 2011

You’ve got a few releases on some very credible labels , can you tell us about these and when they will be available?
Yes for sure, theres lots of bits waiting to come out. Theres releases on Saved, Robsoul, Tsuba, smoke city music& One Records all out by April and ive just wrapped up my second ep for One which will be out September/October time

Do you have any gigs lined up that we should know about?
For all gigs the best place to check is my myspace but the one i'm on full buzz factor for is the Saved party at Miami this year. Nic Fanciulli, Matthias Tanzmann, Stacey Pullen, Tim Green, Gary Beck and little old me. Excited is an understatement .

What about previous gigs any ones stick out in particular ? any funny tales?
Lots of funny tales and horror stories!! But i don't want to scare you and a gentleman never tells .

Quickies?

fave record at the moment?

Okain "Corner Boys" on Jetaime Records

fave label at the moment?

Maybe a little biased but One Records, okay very biased!!

fave peice of studio equiptment or plug in?
Macbook Pro

fave film?

Pulp Fiction

slow cookin' or fast food?

slow cookin' for sure

Cheers for that Jordan, we'll look forward to the releases and keep you guys here at Slow Cookin' informed...

Back to Basics - The 1000th Party

1991. Britain is in deep recession. Unemployment figures reach 2 million. The Gulf war has begun. The nation is submerged in doom and gloom.

By November, the locals of Leeds had an escape route. A gateway to a better place with good company, good times and a soundtrack to match. On November 21st of that year, The Music Room opened its doors to the first Back to Basics night. Ralph Lawson, unaware that he was about to kick-start an institution, playing the first record; Marshall Jefferson's 'Open Our Eyes'. Fast forward 20 years and they are the proud owners of the longest running club night in the world. In its time the like of Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx, Groove Armada, Derrick Carter and Todd Terry have taken control of the mixer at the now legendary club. As Basics founder Dave Beer once said, ‘anyone who is worth their salt in dance music have passed through the doors’. This weekend, Basics regulars will be treated to their 1000th party, with deep/soulful house ambassador Kerri ‘Kaoz’ Chandler headlining. Chandler will be playing a 4 HOUR set, complete with live vox and keyboards. Holy Schmoke.

Kerri 'Kaoz' Chandler

It doesn't stop there for the Basics crew. The line-ups for the next two month have been released, and they are as strong as ever - there'll be no break to get our heads together with a solid line up each week throughout January and February. Slow Cookin' favourites S.A.S. (Adam Shelton & Subb-an) celebrate their One Records party, we see the return of long time resident and Basics regular Andrew Weatherall and we round off an eventful two months with Italians stars Massi DL and Rio Padice. As well as these superb bookings, the residents are amongst the best you will find. Upstaging the guests is a regular occurence.

Cast your eyes over these line ups and get your place booked ASAP.

Cos/Mes

Tokyo based cosmic-jazz duo Cos/Mes (DJ Flatic & 5ive) are causing quite a stir amongst DJ's and music lovers worldwide. A busy 2010 saw the release of no less than four 12" singles and their second full length LP, Gozmez Land - Chaosexotica, on Lovefinger's ESP Institute. Their music takes us on a celestial voyage through the progessive and psychedelic until we become blissfully unaware that we are stranded in the wild balearic-disco undergrowth, deep in the heart of Cos/Mes' Gozmez Land.

2011 sees no let up for Cos/Mes. A new 12" on Belgian imprint King Kung Foo Records entitled Naruto will get a release at the end of the month (you can stream the track on King Kung Foo's Soundcloud page, otherwise, buy here). Naruto is a dark cosmic chugger complete with jungle noises to unsettle and gentle guitar licks to sooth. On the flip we get a remix from label owners Ronny & Renzo, who a offer a techno-orientated alternative which is slightly more friendly on the dancefloor.

There is, however, more to Cos/Mes than their prolific output. The video below demonstrates that their work, as well as being audibly breathtaking, is visually stunning. Cos/Mes distort the boundary between music and art, even their sleeve designs, beautifully crafted by ESP Insitute's Mario Hugo, are something to behold.

So, without further ado, forget everything you've heard before and delve in the world of Cos/Mes. You won't regret it.

Spencer Kincy(Gemini) - Live @ Deep in the Flowers Dallas 1996

Spencer Kincy (Gemini)

For those who don't who Spencer Kincy (aka Gemini) is, he was one of Chicago's main men in the whole Chicago house revival, both as a DJ and as a producer. He's had releases on labels such as Peacefrog, Cajul , Planet E and Relief. Personally, I rank Gemini in my top 10 producers, although sometimes he can be noisey and a bit wierd, he has a knack of making them sound so wrong it's right.

As a DJ he weaved in and out of musical genres (often blending uptempo acid house with down temp sleazy disco tackle) and covered sounds right across the board. This might not be everyones cuppa but it's well worth a listen.

As to where Gemini is now? Well that's a story for another time...

Fraser's Thursday Thought - Bill Brewster

Bill Brewster's got Steez!!

Just wanted to bring your attention to two tracks which I love dearly and discovered through the lush mix that Bill Brewster did for Resident Advisor in 2009. (RA.151 Bill Brewster).

Aside from being a quality selecta, Bill also produces under the name 'Popular Peoples Front' with Slow Cookin' fave Chris Duckenfield. He has written some of the best books about DJ culture and dance music along with pal Frank Broughton.....including the sublime 'Last night a DJ saved my life'. He also runs a brilliant forum dj history which is a wealth of knowledge for all things music.........Busy guy!!!

Bill Brewster if the sign didn't give it away.

Both of these tracks were released before I was born but still sound as fresh as a daisy today which is testament to their quality!

First Up......

Frank & Roby - Level with me.( R.S Records)(1982)

A bootleg of Barry "the fish" Melton - Level with me.

I absolutely love this track and would love to get my hands on a copy but once again this is a £50 jobbo from discogs. I must just have expensive taste!!

And secondly.....

Skylite - Boogie Butt (Rampart Records) (1979)

Another brilliant slice of disco funk!! I picked this up on the recent 'Secret Weapons' cd, put out through the excellent dj history website mentioned above.

E.A.R Records

Eclectic Avenue Records are a Leeds based label which started just over a year ago. With releases from the likes of The Dead Rose Music Compnay, Rob Mello, Pete Herbert , Popular Peoples Front, and Justin Harris already, they are making something of name for themselves. They release vinyl only, a dying art form in this digital age. GBS is an avid vinyl collector and I hate it when he pulls out gems that are vinyl only jobbo’s, however, I love it at the same time as it makes the tracks that little more exclusive.

                  Ryan Shaw                J.Cub                 Leena Sharma

Head honcho J.Cub took the time out of his busy family life, as well as his moving house and writing music schedule to answer us a few questions...

Hiya Jacob, how’s things..?
All good thanks, I had a really chilled out Festive period with my wife and 4 year old Son. It was the 1st time in about 6 years that I wasn’t playing, so have started 2011 with a spring in my step.

Now E.A.R. records, what’s all that about?
Eclectic Avenue Records (E.A.R) , it’s a vinyl only record label that has the abilty to put out an “Eclectic” style of high quality music, an “Avenue” for “Eclectic” music. We press up 300 1st editions vinyls (this is stated on the artwork) when they have all been sold we press up another 300 but they will state “2nd edition” pressing, therefore you want to be getting your hands on the 1st editions. The label is designed with quality in mind and this can be seen / heard with the producers that have been signed to the label such as.. LTJ Xperience, Popular Peoples Front, Pete Herbert, Toby Tobias, Rob Mello, Justin Harris, Small Giants (which is myself and Joshua IZ), The Dead Rose Music Company, PBR Streetgang and our in house star, Ryan Shaw.

What made you change direction from the Baker Street records to E.A.R. records?
It took a lot for me to do this, I started Baker Street back in 2006 with Paul Hardy, its like giving up a child. I lost loads of sleep over the decision to sell my half to Paul. Basically I had been planning E.A.R for years, the style, the sound, the look and where I wanted to take the music. Baker Street was and still is one of the strongest House music imprints but that’s what it was “a House music label” and I wanted to be able to involve different styles of music. We didn’t want to spoil what we had achieved with Baker Street so I reluctantly sold my half to Paul so he could keep the flag flying. I wont lie it took me about half a day to sign the contract, I even went through about 10 different pens to sign it with as I wanted to say goodbye with a good pen, and yes I did share a tear. However this meant I could put all of my energy into E.A.R and Paul could carry on with what he was doing.

Which artists have inspired you?
Haha love this question, this often comes up in interviews and when I start going through and the reason why you can see people drifting off, but I like to give the reason why they are inspiring to me rather than just say a load of names. So I will try and keep it to a minimum…. In no paticular order…

Barry White for his voice, song writing and how he layered strings in his records

Ian Durry for what he had to put up with in his life and he has to be one of musics best wordsmiths (if you get time listen to the lyrics in “There ain't half been some clever bastards”

“Einstein can't be classed as witless.
He claimed atoms were the littlest.
When you did a bit of splitting-em-ness
Frighten everybody shitless”

Cant help but laugh at that.

Quincy Jones, the best producer EVER to walk the planet. When you delv into who he has produced and the styles he has produced it just knocks you out. Ive just had to stop writing and go and put “Razzamatazz” on the record player now. Its just one of the tracks that really shows you the emmence sound he produced.

Don Letts, bit of name droping here but Ive had the pleasure of djing with Don and also he played one of my tracks on his cult radio show on 6 music. This guy is a proper DJ, without him there would not be any 2 tone, and that means no Specials! Can you imagine ?? an amazing guy who changed how people saw eachother in race coulor and creed. Please read up on him if you don’t know. He is a bloody nice bloke as well.

Kraftwerk, um now people have always talked about aliens being on this planet before Humans existed. Well I kind of think the same about Kraftwerk these guys were so ahead of their time that they must have been time travelers. Still amazes me some of the sounds they made back in the 1970’s compared to the sounds people are still “trying” to make now with all this technology.

Elvis, I wasn’t that much into his music however his performances were just amazing, he was a proper showman. Its funny how he was one of the 1st artists to go out on stage and just go for it. After that everyone started to do it.

Joe Meek, a bit of a sad story of his live but if you have seen the film “Telstar” you will know what an amazing person he was. He used to make weird sounds out of making new pieces of studio equipment and wiring them wrong. I wont spoil what happened if you havent seen the film of his life but if you get chance watch it

Ive actually stood outside the property in London where there is now a blue plaque on the wall. Sad I know.

There are so many more I could go on with but I think that’s enough for now.

Who should we keep an eye out for in the future?Lady Gaga, she’s shit you need to avoid her at all costs.
The future brings mystery for E.A.R we pretty much have most of the releases ready to release for this year, starting with Ryan Shaw “Lovin” feat Pete Herbert remix in Feb
, then we have the followin .. Justin Harris and Rob Mello, PBR Streetgang and Toby Tobias, Small Giants, and there are a few more that we are keeping under our hats for now. Further than that we don’t know, Im asking a few choice artists to send music to me.

I hear your starting a live show, when will this start and what kind of sound can we expect?
Yes “The Allstar Beat Samplers” it’s a complex idea, something else I have been planning for years. It’s live band with Drums, Horn Section, 4 piece backing group, a sampler and 4 different lead vocalists. Im even going to be doing a vocal! You can expect to hear, Jazz, Funk, Hip Hop, Disco and an element of Ska. I have some amazing people involved like the trumpet player Malc is from the Haggis Horns and is also the trumpet player for Jamiroquai, Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse and the list goes on. Ive also got a chart topping vocalist Emmie, and my wife JoJo. Its still very early days and I am still writing but its very exciting, we have our 1st gig on the 29th of May in Leeds. I also want to be able to release our music on the label.

Any gigs that your looking forward to?
Um well there is actually, funny you should ask!
We are doing a E.A.R label party on the 26th of Feb @ ‘The Musiquarium” in Leeds. This is a brand new venue that only holds 150 people max. It’s a FREE party , however you need to of recived an invite. (to do this subscribe to our E.A.R facebook

This is going to be a very special party so Im buzzing about it.

Adam Shelton-Fabric Promo Mix jan 2011

Track artwork

One of our favorites here at Slow Cookin', Adam Shelton made his debut at Fabric on Saturday with the Airlondon Gang. As you can see from the comments below, they did the bee's wax!

"All about room 3 last night! You guys smashed it!"

"mate big respect, you set a proper good vibe in room three on saturday. always a pleasure"

Not our words, the words of Fabric regulars.

To celebrate this momentus weekend, he threw together "One" hell of a mix. No messing about, straight up - balls out house from the Below/One Recordings co-owner. The mix is made up from forthcoming and past releases on his own imprint ,unreleased tackle and little gems pulled from bygone days. All I can say is my Moolah is on him having a Fabric mix in a little silver tin within the next three years!

Live at Robert Johnson Vol. 4

This is great. This is really great.

Every so often, a mix appears out of nowhere and surprises you. Tracks you least expect are expertly chosen with assurance and blended together in such a way as to seem completely separate. Think Juan Atkins' Legends: Vol. 1 or Morgan Geist's Unclassics. Hammann & Janson's Live at Robert Johnson is one of those mixes. Listen just the once, and you're all like, "oh god. Janson. Hammann. You've got some serious weapon shit right there."

Highly recommended.

Fatnecks u.s garage mix(part 1)

This is a mix that the head honcho of Kitchen Sink Disco and Space(ibiza) resident has let us share with you guys. The mix is made up of tracks from u.s garage scene cira 1991. Click on the title to down load or stream....Enjoy...and keep your eyes peeled for the KSD party easter bank hol which myself and fraser thought will be playing...!

Fatnecks words to us:

"first part of a mix i did for the car, dug out a few tunes from one of the eras in house that produced some of my favourite records .

anyway after suffering summer of 88 burnout and avoiding most of the rave muntered years of 89/90 buying balearic tat and bleep records, this is the sort of stuff I used to hear a certain little bespectacled scotsman play in a certain manchester nightclub when I started going out on a regular basis again, or a really fit blonde haired bird play it upstairs at a certain Flying do in notts, or a bearded bloke in london"

Moody - Ol' Dirty Vinyl (U Used To Know) KDJ US

A masterpiece in sampling and groove executed perfectly as usual by Kenny Dixon Jnr. Pops and Crackles et al!

Been out for a few months already but I can't stop playing it this week. Already selling for £20 and above online through those greedy gits that buy up 6 mint copies and hawk them on discogs for a massively inflated price. Though I fear I may not be able relinquish from picking this up.

This track heavily samples......Donna Summer - Spring Affair

And also Elkie Brooks - Sunshine After The Rain......on the vocal.
