Zutekh Podcast 003 - Tristan Da Cunha - Come Into My House!

Track artwork

A cheeky Poddy that been on phone for a fair while now, One of my fave DJ's & Long time insparation Tristan Da Cunha.I bought my first ever "house" record of Tris back in the play music days & i've been watching him play for years at Basic's always one to be warming proceeding perfectly or taking it to the next level after the guest. The Basics 20th Birthday mix is one of my all time faves & this one is not too far behind!Proper party vibez!!

These are a few Tris had to say about it....

"When i was asked to do a podcast for Zutekh i started to think about what kind of
mix i should do for it.Do i play this do i play that? I have so many different flavours
that i am into but i didn't want it to be a mish mash of all of them.So with this in mind
i decided to pick a certain style and go with a particular vibe.I listen to Ad Shelton's
ace podcast again so i didn't do anything similar as i wanted to present something
that would be different than what was done previously I thought about doing
something cutting edge with loads of new promos and unreleased stuff, i thought
about doing a 90's deep house mix as i have loads of weapons on that tip too,but
what i realised is there's lots of those mixes floating about so i decided to go for one
of my favourite vibes, An Old School House Party Mix."

TheGoodLife! Presents The Funky Uncle's Park Bench Mixtape

Track artwork

New York City based lifestyle agency and creative collective TheGoodLife! has partnered with famed photographer and noted music historian Ricky Powell and OG DJ Smoke L.E.S. to produce The Funky Uncle’s Park Bench Mixtape.

Released on the occasion of his 50th birthday, The Funky Uncle’s Park Bench Mixtape is Ricky Powell’s sonic interpretation of what it means to live TheGoodLife! and features a collection of rare tracks from the golden era of funky jazz . Curated to, in his words “be like a collage of colorful characters who make the kind of music that enhances the ambiance of any occasion,” the mix is nearly an hour and a half of funk flavor sprinkled with Ricky-isms.

The Funky Uncle’s Park Bench Mixtape was mixed by DJ Smoke L.E.S., another NYC native and music purist who had this to say about the project, “To be in the realm of an iconic figure like Ricky Powell, whose credibility speaks for itself, was amazing and I was humbled and honored to take part. Ricky’s music knowledge is incredible; he’s literally like an encyclopedia.”

J.Cub Recorded Live at Throwing Shapes @ The Garage

 Track artwork

We did an interview with J.Cub a while back and he kindly supplied us with a mix, well here's another one. Which i personally love. I don't need to say much else as J.Cub already has.

"When I was asked to play for the Throwing Shapes launch party I jumped at the chance, especially because I was asked to play The Waxwerks (Record Store by day, back room of the club by night).
The brief was simple, play what I want how I want but keep it interesting, so head 1st into my record collection I went.
If you like your sets a bit different taking you in, over, around, under and through the houses with a 4x4 beat then you should like this, if you like your sets to sound the same throughout then this probably isnt for you (try it you may like it)
Oh and all is played off vinyl, now you cant play anything else in a Vinyl only Record Store can you!!??"

Derrick May -98 WJLB (Detroit Radio)-1989.

I come across this whilst looking for the Derrick May-Mayday Mix(which i will find & put up very soon). This is basically a mix recorded in 1988 from live radio back int day here's what the chap had to say about it...

"I happened to press record back in 1988 on New Years Eve to catch this “MayDay Mix” by Derrick May as 98 WJLB (Detroit Radio) counted down to the new year 1989. I really loved recording these MayDay mixes because there were always traxx that were not in stores or If I happened to have the record I would hear a different version of the song than the one on the record. But the craziest thing about the MayDay mixes is the reel to reel that you can hear sometimes spinning backward through the mix. This is classic Detroit I bet no one has this recording ha-ha!!! I’m sure I have a lot more of them I can dig up as well. This is a good history lesson for those pretending to know about the roots of Detroit Dance Music!"

QUELL-MIXES

Quell is swell....have a peep!

Here's his Bio.

"One could be very challenged and even confused looking at Quell’s output so far. Although a relatively young artist in terms of discography, the producer has already made it clear that he is very little concerned about sticking to one style of music or a certain scene of musicians. It is so rare these days to find individuals who have a bold approach towards dance music, pushing genre defying DJ-ing and general diversity, not only in the studio but also in life. Ranging from mid tempo deep house and afro-beat house/techno, to straight up Chicago/SF jackin’ house, he has worked with labels such as Ibadan, These Days, Boddhi Satva's Offering Recordings, Kolour Recordings and Blockhead Recordings to name but a few.

Quell’s music is an amalgamation of images, sounds and nostalgia that derive from his perception of a universal “club sound”. Coming from an indie pop/rock background and having lived in London for a long time, since the tender age of 17, he was able to witness the flourishing worldwide dance movement of the late 90s and allowed himself to be exposed to a multinational musical collage that would later influence his art immensely.

Quell is a DJ's DJ. The words that would accurately describe his DJ performances are diversity, versatility and dance-floor perception. To quote the artist “…I’ll play almost anything I feel like given the right moment on the right dance-floor. House, Techno, Pop, Disco… I am generally against just filling up a bag with the latest batch of released records from the local record stores and going out to play wearing an imaginary blindfold...” If there’s one thing for certain, it is that as far as talent and promise go, Quell has plenty of both, and it won’t be long before he becomes one of dance music’s household names. Jef K - Late Night Soul Mix 01-01-2002

With most folk around these ends heading to Monsoon in the Park, pretending they've always loved Techno...

"Excuse me i remember when u was in Lush every Thursday & Iocus on a Friday giving Electro wobbles to Micky Slimm,& you told us that our music was boring"...Rant over!

In all fairness i'm not really that into the Cocoon,Vagabonds, trendy vest, muscle queen, fake tan & Geebee vibe, So if i was fighting fit today(Man Flu). I'd be heading down the Garage this eve to see Jef K alongside solid residents Tristan Da Cunha & Buckley!

I've had my eye on Jef K for a while now ever since he did the "i'm in love today" with fellow Frenchman Chris Carrier, he's a solid producer & a wicked DJ who clocking up some serious air miles now. That place will be rocking tonight & to add unk to Funk Iain o Hare & Charlie Myers will be on Backroom duties.!!

So all in all Fuck Cocunt in the Park, listen to this mix instead of going there & head down to see the man in the flesh later today!..

Enjoy!

Justin Long-The Day the Paper Mountain Trembled

For the folks who are not familiar with Justin Long..get Familiar....!!!

I remember hearing a mix from him circa 2003 and it blew me away, i just got hold of all the tracks on the mix, but there was no way on earth i could put them together like he could. He’s a proper Chicago house DJ from Chicago. He's wicked to see LIVE too as he is so animated with the famous head swivel & "sling it in" mixing style. He also runs the DotBleep Label which is an off shoot of 2020vision(the pat nice vinyl back in the day & the No Assembly Firm tracks were a must have). He was a regualr at Basics & the best time i ever saw him was when he played at Madhatters(Frenchys old night) he just droped jazzy boomty bombs all night before it all get a little too tech imo.

Anyway i'll try find a mix from the fella from back int' day. For time been here’s a recent mix from purely dedicated to the warehouse vibes he grew up on. This mix is tough yet gentle & groovy at the same time.

This is full on Acccceeeeiiiiiiiiddddddd

BICEP | MUSCLE WORX (EXCLUSIVE MIX FOR FADER MAGAZINE NYC)

This is unreal,....

I come accross this t'other night as i follow Bicep on Soundcloud and visit the blog most weeks. Theses guys are bang on the button and always have been. If your not sure who they are..Basically they run a blog called Feel My Bicep which IMO is brilliant as they put alot of stuff up that is usually quite difficult to find & often forgotten. The blog is just brilliant(much better than this one) as it covers most aspects from really romantic(shit) Disco through proper proper House. Anyow here's a few words about the mix from the men themselves.!

An exclusive mix recorded for Fader Magazine New York
Bicep presents "Muscle Worx"
Whilst moving forward is essential in dance music, looking back is equally important. Digging through big ole' dusty creates is a passion of ours and continuing on the theme of our recent track $tripper we've put together a mix of some of our favourite 90s inspired finds from the past two years! It's a mixture of vinyl and some subtle edits which we recorded recently in London summing up what we feel is proper house music at it's finest.
You can catch up spinning some plates down at Fabric on July 7th were we'll be hosting a FEELMYBICEP room with a very special guest, none other than 90s house legend Terrence Parker! Expect Big, Fun, Carefree house

JT-Donaldson-40 Mins of Funk.

A nice little mix here for the 40 minutes of sun that we keep getting inbetween the thunderstorms. So act quick & get the deckchair to soak up some of the Firey ball in the sky before the rain starts again.

JT Donaldson is one my all time fave producers & i'll be honest i never thought of hearing a mix like this from him, but i follow the lad on soundcloud and was plesantly supprised when this popped up.

It would be great to see JT Donaldson play over here as he one of the many U.S Jocks who have cut the mustard for a long time now.

Take Care - a Leigh Lerwill vinyl only mix - May 2012

I noticed this mix on Despo's wall & that lad is usually bob on with anything from records to conspiracys(check his Despo Tv ), Anyow this mix is full of bumping house/garage type tackle, which seems to be on to up at the moment. I was down @ the Garage(imo the best club in Leeds by far these days after just one visit) in Leeds on saturday for the Nest 2nd Birthday and they had Jeremy Sylvester who absolutly smashed it to bits with a similar style..

Anyho Enjoy!
